Everybody needs a hero or two or three...And Grammies may not always come to mind when you think of heroes; but there IS a super hero who lives in the northwest corner of Montana. She's unknown to most of the world because that's just the way it is. Nevertheless when she gets herself in gear, she's a dynamo of power! She's SuperGrammie!, always ready to come to save the day.
She wears 3 layers of pants on the bottom half, 2 pairs of socks in her heavy rubber boots, and 4 shirts of various weights on her upper half. She always tries to look her best, though, color coordinating it all.
Well, there she was one day...Leaning up on her shovel, trying to keep warm by the burning slash pile, when she hears it. Or maybe she doesn't. Does she hear something? It seems to sound like tight jeans rubbing against one another. Swish! Swish!
Yes! There it is again! Swish-swish-swish! That's a deer blowing at Grammie.
SuperGrammie works in the woods with Grandpa David, and she works really hard. After all, she IS a super hero. She gathers up loads of tree branches and hauls them to the slash pile. With knees creaking and a series of fragrant toots wafting along behind...Grammie strains forward pulling the heavy load of giant branches to the burn pile. That's when she hears the blowing.
Suspiciously Grammie scans the woods off to her right. What in the world is that noise? Is it a deer or is it Grandpa David trying to sneak up and scare her with odd noises? SuperGrammie is not scared. No, she calmly looks and listens and waits. Finally she realizes it's definitely a whitetail deer blowing and trying to say, "Hey! I've come for some of that deer candy you've got laying around on the ground." (Deer candy is the drab green moss hanging from the huge trees Grandpa David has cut down.) Grammie is supposed to burn it all up in the slash pile.
Now SuperGrammie is a sweetheart. She tries to blow back at the deer and tell it, "Yes, Dearie, I will leave you some candy. You come back tonight after I'm gone to you'll find it all over the snow here where I'm working. I'll leave you a Christmas gift!"
But Grammie really needs to practice her deer blows and snorts. She barely managed to get the message across to the beautiful creature. The last she saw of the deer was her white tail, twitching back and forth as she jumped over the snow, out of sight...And the next morning, there was no more deer candy lying on the ground.
Her little grandchildren call her SuperGrammie! And they can hardly wait to visit her and Grandpa Dave. There's always a walk through the woods, a ride in the old blue truck, an outing in the snow, a campfire to warm up to...Deer to watch (and the latest story of Grammie's work in the woods). It's important to feel a spirit of adventure and it's so exciting when the family ventures out together... Life is good when your hero is your grandmother.
